Masai Mara National Reserve

Masai Mara is the most popular Wildlife destination on the planet and the world’s top safari big game viewing reserve. This reserve explains the concept of a safari, with millions of gazelle, zebras and wildebeest making their annual pilgrimage to Tanzania and giving birth to thousands of calves in between.  The Mara is also referred to as the most prolific wildlife destination in the world with endless expanses of savannah, untamed wilderness, vast plains and some of the most exotic game ever seen.

During these months the yellow savannah is dotted black by more than 1.5 million wildebeest, zebra and antelopes that migrate from the Serengeti to the Mara in search of food and water.

Maasai Mara National Reserve stretches 1,510 sq KM and is interdependent to Serengeti park and together are referred to as wildlife asylums. This is where the world’s largest multiple game species migration takes place. This movement compromises of more than 1.5 million wildebeest, zebras and antelopes. The main actor in this movement is the wildebeest migrating from Serengeti into Masai Mara during the dry season in Tanzania through the mighty Mara River. This Great Wildebeest Migration deserves its applaud as one of the natural world’s most amazing spectacles. From July onwards, millions of brown and black dots scatter the endless savanah of the mara, until they wander back in December.

Best Time to Visit Mara

When it comes to visiting Mara, the month of July to October is the best time to witness the migration. Although we can’t guarantee that the wildebeest will get to Maasai Mara, we are yet to see a time in a year they don’t make it. For those interested in a wildlife safari all year round, mara is a good place to visit as it’s a big cats destination.

Recommended Number of Days

When traveling with Escape To Africa, we recommend three to four days safaris to enjoy the Mara. And for photographers, the longer the visit, the higher the chancesn of capturing that cultivating safaris
